SkinPen® Microneedling

Model

Genetics, environmental factors, harsh chemicals, and the natural aging process cause damage to our skin in the way of acne, wrinkles, and enlarged pores. Microneedling with the SkinPen® creates controlled micro-wounds that stimulate collagen and new cell growth to provide smoother, firmer, healthier-looking skin.

Candidates

Microneedling with the SkinPen® is beneficial for men and women who are looking to improve their complexion while reducing the appearance of acne scars. This treatment is safe and effective for all skin tones and types, ranging from fair to very dark. Unlike some other non-invasive therapies, the SkinPen® can be used for years without causing any long-term damage to the skin.

Microneedling is not intended for individuals with active skin cancer, sores, open wounds, or irritated skin in the treatment area, and is not appropriate for those using certain acne medications, such as Accutane.

Microneedling Procedure

Microneedling with the SkinPen® is performed in about an hour by a licensed aesthetician. A topical numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area to ensure comfort.

The SkinPen® device is used to create hundreds of controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These injuries promote collagen production and stimulate the skin’s natural healing process while removing debris and increasing blood flow. The prompt healing of these wounds allows for tissue remodeling without scar formation. As the new cells develop, the skin becomes brighter with a smoother tone and texture. This procedure is highly tolerable and afterward can be likened to the feeling of a moderate sunburn.

A SkinPen® treatment can also be combined with platelet-rich plasma to add growth factors to the treatment areas and further regenerative properties to your skin. Blood drawn from your arm is spun in a centrifuge to isolate the growth factors in your blood, which are then applied to your skin during the SkinPen® treatment. During treatment, the growth factors are absorbed into the skin to give an extra boost of rejuvenation to your skin.

Recovery

Microneedling requires little to no downtime, and most patients can return to work or school the following day. You may experience redness immediately following the treatment; however, this will dissipate over the coming hours and days. Additional side effects can include dryness, itchiness, tightness, tenderness, and peeling skin. These effects will resolve on their own and will not result in any lasting complications. Rare side effects may include bruising, infection, and prolonged redness.

Patients are asked to not apply any makeup for 24 hours after their SkinPen® treatment. Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun following your microneedling session. Be sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every day to protect your skin and avoid further sun damage.

Results

Your skin works quickly to rejuvenate and rebuild tissue, and the results of your treatment are apparent within a couple of weeks. Following your SkinPen® Microneedling session, you can expect to see smoother and more even-toned skin with a reduced appearance of acne scars and wrinkles.

Most patients undergo three treatments spaced one month apart to see the best results. If SkinPen® is used for severe acne scarring, it is possible that more than three treatments may be needed to see results. Results from SkinPen® treatments typically last for several months, and touch-up sessions may be performed to maintain results.
