Chemical peels are beneficial for men and women with superficial to severe wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, and skin discoloration. Candidates should be in good health with realistic expectations of the results.
Chemical peels are offered in different strengths and unique chemical solutions depending on your skin condition and your desired result. Here at Pearce Plastic Surgery, we offer two types of chemical peels:
Before your chemical peel, you may be asked to limit your sun exposure, stop the use of your nightly retinol, and avoid any facial scrubs that may affect the outcome of the treatment.
During your chemical peel, the solution is applied to the treatment area and you may feel a stinging or tingling sensation as the chemicals are applied to your skin. Depending on the peel, a neutralizing solution may be applied to neutralize the peel and prevent it from penetrating to the deeper skin levels.
Your recovery depends on the depth of the peel. While deeper peels provide more dramatic results, they also require a more extensive recovery period.
Chemical peels have a five- to ten-day healing process. During this time, you can expect that the treated skin will be red, tight, and slightly irritated. Peeling will begin around day three, do not pick or peel this skin, as it could cause deeper damage and lead to further pigmentation issues. A moisturizer may be applied throughout the day to soothe the skin and increase comfort.
Following your chemical peel, you can expect to see improvement in skin tone, texture, and brightness as well as the decreased appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Light chemical peels can be repeated every few weeks to maintain and enhance results—increased improvement will occur with multiple treatments. Medium chemical peels can be repeated after three to six months.
Your skin will be highly sensitive to the sun after a chemical peel. Avoid exposure when possible and always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher). Chemical peels do not stop the progression of aging, and additional skin maintenance and a healthy lifestyle are required to maintain your results.
