Following the post-operative instructions given to you by Dr. Pearce is the best way to ensure that you properly recover from your tummy tuck surgery.
Like with any procedure, the recovery time will vary depending on each person’s situation and the type of tummy tuck performed.
What Can I Expect During My Tummy Tuck Recovery?
Immediately After the Procedure
Following the procedure, you can expect Dr. Pearce to wrap your incisions with bandages. You may also be covered in a compression garment to minimize swelling.
You will need someone to drive you home after the surgery and take care of you for at least one day.
At Home Care
The compression garment should continue to be worn for at least two weeks to help reduce swelling and speed up the healing process.
Most tummy tuck procedures require drains at the incision sites to prevent fluid from accumulating and causing discomfort. These drains are typically removed after one week.
Dr. Pearce will provide you with instructions on how to clean and care for your drains.
Dr. Pearce will also instruct you to rest for the first few days following the procedure but will ask you to do light walking to avoid blood clots.
Most patients feel ready to return to work a week after the procedure but should refrain from serious exercise for three to four weeks.
You should prepare to feel some range of numbness for weeks or months following the surgery, but it will fade with time.
You should allow a full three months for the swelling and bruising to subside.
The scars from your tummy tuck surgery will also fade with time, but can easily be concealed by your clothing.
How Can I Maintain My Tummy Tuck Results?
The results of a tummy tuck can be long-lasting, depending on how well you care for your body following the procedure.
4 Tips to Maintain Your Tummy Tuck Results:
- Take the recommended time off work to rest
- Wait until you are cleared by your doctor before diving back into a heavy exercise routine
- Live a healthy, active lifestyle
- Maintain a balanced diet and avoid foods that are high in sugar and fat
Although tummy tuck results are designed to be permanent, it is up to you to care for your body during and after the recovery process to ensure you are satisfied with your results for a lifetime.
You should remember to be patient during the recovery process and not be disappointed if the time frames for a full recovery are extended for your specific case.
The only aspect of your recovery that is in your control is to follow the instructions per your doctor.
